| Due to the anticipated efficiency of the building fabric and design, cooling of the building will be achieved during the summer months by natural stack ventilation achieved through high clerestory glazing and the prevention of overheating by large overhangs and south facing green roof canopies. Heating demand on the other hand is expected to be minimal. The children themselves will present sufficient heating during daily use together with available passive solar gains and this will be supplemented by two small (3.4 kW )Air to Air source heat pumps accommodated in recesses within the building structure. This heating method is largely experimental but it is hoped that it will provide minimal heating with extremely low capital cost and relatively low energy use though the heat pumps with coefficients of around 1:3. |
| The project is complicated by the limited site access and owing to the position of the existing temporary preschool building project has been phased to allow the preschool to continue their use of the existing building until the main part of the new building is complete. The old building will then be removed and the final phase including south facing green roof canopies, office and lobby will be completed over an anticipated four week period. This strategy has been adopted to allow minimum disruption to the function of the preschool. Additionally, during the excavation for the building, a number of factors were overcome including local archaeology, a previously undetected large well immediately underneath one of the pad foundations and generally poor drainage. |
